Importance of an Audible and Visible Alarm Systems

The foremost benefits of audible and visible fire alarm systems are to alert people about fire mishaps or their life as well as property in dangerous situations. In other words, the fire alarm system uses to aware people of the fire of the building that they need to evacuate. The alarm system is featured with both audible and visible signals (incorporating sirens and lights) that help in getting the messages across to everyone.

Here’s the importance of both audible and visible alarm system that you need to know.

Audible Fire Alarm System

The audible fire alarm system or audible smoke alarm is incorporated with a sound that can easily distinguish from the usual or prevalent sound in the room. Fire alarm with audible sign allows the occupants of the building to leave the place immediately when they hear a different sound.

Sirens are a necessary part of any fire alarm system, which ensures even those visually impaired people and with limited hearing to aware about the fire for evacuating the place. Some of the important features of audible fire alarms (audio alarm systems) are as follows:

  • The sound of the alarm system is easy to distinguish from the prevailing noise in the particular building to prevent misinterpreting the alarm.
  • Alarm noise levels should not exceed 120 A-weighted decibels (dbA).
  • The audible alarm (fire alarm audio) needs to exceed the noise level in the room by 15dbA. If it happens the noise level of the fire alarm to exceed 120dbA, then the alarm may be only 5dbA louder, however, it must sound off for at least 60 seconds.

Visible Fire Alarm System

The visible fire alarm system designs with lights that help to notify deaf people to evacuate the place instantly when they see the light of the alarm. Flashing lights and text banners are two accurate instances of visible alarms, whose purpose to catch people’s attention, and even any occupant of the building is deaf. A list of guidelines of visible fire alarm system is given below:

  • Visible alarms are clear white.
  • Visible fire alarms are unsafe to look at directly or increase the risk of seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. Therefore all should be visible from a single location must flash simultaneously.
  • It is recommended to install the visible alarms in 100-foot increments along the length of every hallway and within 15 feet of either end because of lights of the alarms generally visible from any location either in a room or hallway.
  • It is advisable to install the flashing lights of alarm systems between 80 and 96 inches above the highest floor level in the room or 6 inches below the ceiling to maximize visibility.
  • The intensity of visibility of visual alarms must not exceed 1,000 cd. It’s important to keep in mind that flashing lights in an ordinary room or hallway may have a brightness rating of 15 candelas (cd), but for brightly lit areas, the lights of the fire alarm may need to be more intense.
